In his second season (2023-24), despite an FA Cup win against Manchester City, United faced a challenging Premier League season, finishing in an uncharacteristically low eighth position. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.

Potential candidates linked to the position include former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, who is a strong favorite among bookmakers. Ruud van Nistelrooy, United’s assistant manager and former club striker, is also in consideration, possibly as an interim solution. Gareth Southgate, the England national team manager, is admired by United’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, though his appointment would be met with mixed reactions from the fanbase due to his conservative style.

This decision is sparking considerable attention as he brings fresh perspective but limited managerial experience at the Premier League level. The club is now actively searching for a permanent successor, with names like former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being speculated as possible options to provide stability until a long-term manager is confirmed​.
